After a
successful engagement in 2001, I was called back to work as a
DATA
VALIDATION
ANALYST and
PROJECT
MANAGER
on a major data
warehousing project to support BellSouth’s successful bid to enter the long
distance market throughout its nine state region.
I led a team of four data analysts charged
with validating the output of the new data warehouse and reporting system. The
team had to compare the results of parallel runs of the new system with that of
the old system, identify the differences, and ensure that all differences were
either explained or fixed.
I developed tools and techniques for validating large volumes of data from all
areas of the BellSouth architecture. Using Oracle, Toad, and Excel, I designed
and implemented a comprehensive audit and control process that was used to
validate the new system. I also designed and implemented the ongoing
operational validation procedures to be used monthly. I relied heavily on
statistical analysis to identify deviations from historical trends that could
indicate problems with the warehouse, either in the input data or in the interim
processing.
I designed and managed the development of a new, automated validation tool that
greatly reduced the manual labor involved in the monthly validation process and
decreased the time it took to deliver the results. The typical monthly cycle
was reduced from 640 man hours to just over 30. The new process, named ValBot,
quickly became the linchpin of the monthly validation process and was relied
upon throughout the organization to ensure the integrity of the warehouse.
Throughout
the project, I continually refined and streamlined processes and procedures, and
trained the appropriate BellSouth personnel in their use to ensure an orderly
transition of operations.
