I was brought
in to work as a DATA
ANALYST
on a major data
warehousing project supporting BellSouth’s bid to enter the long distance market
throughout its nine state region. I worked with a team of consultants and
employees, coordinating the efforts of business analysts, infrastructure
developers, Java developers, rules developers, testers, and system engineers.
I was assigned to analyze nearly 100 data
feeds from over 25 source systems, identifying component elements, mapping them
to the data architecture, and defining validation and transformation business
rules. I was responsible for the integrity of data being provided to the
Oracle data warehouse. I performed a detailed analysis of the incoming
data and crosschecked findings with the designated business analysts for each
legacy system.
The project involved a highly advanced data
warehouse population mechanism that included a Java-based Versant
object-oriented database coupled with the iLog JRules-based business rule system
to perform validations and aggregations on the data. I worked closely with
the software developers to design and refine the business rules and data
transformations before the data was loaded into the data warehouse.
I created an automated tool that enabled us
to quickly identify and understand changes to the Erwin data model. Due to
frequent changes in the model, use of this tool spread throughout the
organization, enabling all groups to understand and respond to changes in the
data architecture.
After a strategic re-evaluation of all
ongoing projects in the wake of the September 11th attacks, the data warehouse
initiative was dramatically scaled back, and my part of the project was
cancelled. I spent two weeks closing down the data mapping effort,
documenting progress and status, and creating a library of source documents and
project deliverables.
